Rynfield graphic designer draws her success

Rynfield resident Latisha Ramsamy third place in the Design-A-Cup competition.

Grabbing every opportunity with both hands got Rynfield resident Latisha Ramsamy third place in the Design-A-Cup competition.

The 22-year-old is a graphic design student at the University of Johannesburg and could not wait to showcase her talent in the Wild Bean Café competition.

“The competition was introduced to all students by our lecturer at the University of Johannesburg,” she said.

“The idea of my design being sold at every Wild Bean Café around South Africa blew my mind. The exposure of this competition would not only allow my work to be seen by thousands more but also help further my career.”

Being passionate about art, Ramsamy took just over a week to brainstorm her design.

“My family, my country and my passion for design inspired the design,” she said.

“I based the design on celebrating 20 years of Wild Bean Café. I did something relatable. I made coffee bean characters to imitate people and what we do as South Africans when we celebrate.

“Coming from an Indian background, we always burst fireworks at my family’s house during Diwali time; I included popping a bottle of champagne, dancing, music and blowing the vuvuzela.

“I created these elements into a comic and pop art theme to make the cup not only aesthetic but also telling the customers a story.”

The freelance graphic designer said just being in the top five alone was an achievement.

“I entered the competition last year as well and did not make it, but this year showed me that hard work and determination will only take you that much further,” she said.

“I am completely honoured and humbled by this experience. Coming in third has already boosted my design career more than I have ever expected, and the response is overwhelming.

“I am so grateful to God for helping me reach this incredible achievement, as well as my mum, sister- and brother-in-law for their constant support towards me and of course Wild Bean Café and BP, thank you for allowing young designers such as myself to show the world what they are capable of.”
