Three inspiring Christmas trends to try at home

Get into the festive spirit with these ideas.

Forget big bling, over the top fancy schmancy, glitter baubles and massive, red velvet bows. This year, Christmas is all about celebrating the beauty of simplicity with homemade, handcrafted decorations. After countless lockdowns and tough economic conditions, we are going back to basics this festive season and are focusing on what is really important – family, health and being together.

Take a look at these easy, DIY Christmas decoration trends to make at home:

Decorate with nature

Pine cones are a must for your decorations, so gather the children and go collect some at a nearby park or forest. Use them as they are or add a bit of glam by dusting them with a little metallic spray paint. They are beautiful on a simple, wooden wreath with some greenery from your garden or even add feathers for a whimsical feel. Use them as placeholders for name tags or in a centerpiece on the table combined with dried oranges, berries, dried fruit and nuts.

Berry merry colours

Instead of the traditional green, red and gold, this year will see berry tones dominate the Christmas colour palette. Think dark plum purples and soft raspberry pinks paired with a little gold in between to give the look an elegant touch.

Go “green” with gift wrapping

In keeping with the simple, made-with-love Christmas feels this year, gifts will also be wrapped with recycled materials and creative alternatives. Use leftover fabric pieces instead of expensive wrapping and complete the look with a pretty fabric bow or some twine wrapped with cinnamon sticks or foliage. Opt for a reusable shopping bag instead of the usual gift bag and say “Merry Christmas” with a plantable greeting card.
