A brush with local artists: meet Magda Scheepers

The art route is held on every last Sunday of the month (October 31) at the CR Swart Park, Rynfield from 09:00 to 15:00.

Fairleads resident Magda Scheepers finds true happiness in her artwork.

The 57-year-old is a Benoni Art Route (Bar) fine artist and sculptor.

Since 1986, she has tried her hand at several arts and crafts, such as stained glass, beading, stamping and spray painting.

Then in 2003, she started painting with oils and acrylic. She paints various themes: wildlife, landscapes, still life and abstract.

Magda said she prefers oil as an art medium, but also enjoys experimenting with other mediums. She often uses textured mediums in her paintings.

“I love art and to create gives me joy, as well as sharing my art with other art enthusiasts. I am also a keen photographer and often use my photographs as reference,” she said.

She recently ventured into creating sculptures in steel, which was a lifelong dream.

The Bar member was tutored by sculptor Gert Potgieter.

“I use a technique that Gert refers to as metal modelling that involves building up sculpture with small pieces and blobs of metal welded together around an armature.

“Gert developed this technique over many years and as far as can be established, it is unique to his sculpture.”

She feels privileged to be the first student to be taught his unique technique and to put her style to it.

She also creates garden sculptures and wall hangings, making use of scrap metal and found objects.

Her art had been sold to collectors in South Africa, Greece, Chile, Canada and London.

Magda described her art as unique, vibrant and full of emotion, which sets her apart from other artists.
