A brush with local artists: meet Elaine Marx

Elaine is constantly striving to place her own experiences and personality on each painting which makes her work different from other artists.

Cloverdene resident, Elaine Marx is passionate about her art. The 55-year-old said when she paints, time disappears.

“It is an amazing feeling to be able to create something that did not exist before,” she said.

Elaine is constantly striving to place her own experiences and personality on each painting, which makes her work different from other artists.

She is the owner of Art Alive Art School in Northmead. Elaine finds inspiration in people and places, in South Africa and abroad.

“A beautiful place can easily create the urge to put my impression of it on a canvas. Several members of my family are also artists and during my schooling years, art was my favourite subject,” said Elaine.

She prefers to work in oils, and her technique has been developed over the last 30 years.

She has attended classes and workshops with several art teachers after completing her four-year teaching studies.

She has had the privilege to study with Rita Wilkes, Voges Meyer, Norbert Schling and Paul Botes.

Rembrandt and Claude Monet are her main influences.

The art enthusiast said she loves to try to figure out how these artists worked to be able to enhance her methods.

She is a member of the Benoni Art Route, the Paint and Palette group, Artists Working Together and the Benoni Art Society.

In 2008 and 2009 she won a national art competition and a regional art competition, respectively. In 2014 she received the Vocational Award from the Rotary Group of Benoni Aurora.

Her art pieces are owned by collectors in South Africa and abroad.

Elaine said she enjoys travelling around our beautiful country and abroad, specifically Europe, where she finds inspiration in the people, the old buildings, and the master’s works at the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay especially.

“Photography is another love of my life and during my travels, I often collect reference photographs for my paintings,” she said.

She also enjoys teaching art at my school and enjoys time at her easel.

She said, “I feel close to my creator when I create.”

Her mission is to give the viewer of her artwork the pleasure of belonging or a memory of a familiar place or situation.
