A brush with local artists: meet John Kirkwood

Benoni Art Route is open to anyone with a passion for drawing, painting and sculpture.

For Morehill resident John Kirkwood, drawing and painting have been a lifetime passion.

The 74-year-old said art has always been his hobby.

“It all started in my schooling days and, unfortunately, I took a long break until I retired. Now, hardly a day goes by without something new on my easel,” he said.

He likes to paint scenes from different places he has visited in South Africa and overseas.

“My landscapes and seascapes are painted in the more classical or realistic style. Each painting is different and unique and has a story behind it.”

John said the monthly Art Route exhibition at CR Swart Park has created new opportunities for many East Rand artists.

“The quality and variety of paintings by the artists is amazing.”

Benoni Art Route is open to anyone with a passion for drawing, painting and sculpture.

A selection committee will then judge the work for approval, following application for membership for the following full year.
