Etwatwa artist embraces his creativity

The youngster said one thing he always wanted to achieve with his art is to touch people's lives, give people a reason to smile again, and for them to purchase his art pieces.

Etwatwa artist Tebogo Ledwaba is proudly embracing his skills and using them to make his dreams come true.

Tebogo is part of the Artists Working Together (AWT). He was introduced to the organisation by Elaine Marx.

The 22-year-old started creating his sophisticated pieces of artwork at the age of four and he finds joy and peace in exploring the art world.

“I realise that I could draw when I was still attending crèche. My friends and I would draw on the soil with our fingers and I was the only one who could draw a 3D car even on soil,” said Tebogo.

“When I was in Grade Four, in our arts and culture class, there were drawings done by other artists on the wall and those drawings inspired me to nurture my talent and continue drawing.”

The former learner of Benoni Educational College said he had to stop drawing for some time so he could focus on school.

“In 2008 when I started drawing again, my best friend Lethabo Mdluli, who is the best artist I have ever seen helped me sharpen my skills. When I managed to draw my English teacher in Grade 12, I knew that I had it in me and I could make a living with art.

“However, being the only artist in the family, it was difficult to convince my parents that this is the journey that I wanted to take but as time went by they accepted my decision.”

He said he specialises in pen and pencil drawings but will soon start painting.

The youngster said one thing he always wanted to achieve with his art is to touch people’s lives, give people a reason to smile again, and for them to purchase his art pieces.

“I’m working on my first series of five pen artworks titled “Tears of the sun”, which will probably be showcased at the next winter art exhibition.

“My favourite local artists are Pam Selki, Elaine Marx and Siya Nzwakele.”

He added that young people who have discovered their talents need to nurture them because that’s the one thing that cannot be taken away from you.

“Keep holding the mic, pen or paintbrush and keep on dancing because you never know who is watching.”

His art pieces are sold at the AWT exhibitions or you can put a request on Facebook: Tebogo Alfred Ledwaba Art.
