Local DJ makes his mark in a national talent search competition

The 49-year-old said being part of the competition was one of his goals on his bucket list.

Actonville resident Anil Jugmahan, better known as a DJ Q’D UP, has made his mark in a national talent search competition to be aired on March 28.

The 49-year-old said being part of the competition was one of his goals on his bucket list.

“I am happy that I was selected from thousands of entrants. I made it to the top 12,” he said.

“I entered the competition to get exposure, to show my talent to the country and put Actonville on the map. With the exposure I hope I will be able to get financial support to start a DJ school for underprivileged children.”

He has been a DJ for almost 10 years.

Anil said he has always wanted to be a DJ and his passion for audio equipment and music led him down this path.
“It all started as a hobby in 2011, performing at family and friends’ events. In 2016, I resigned as a product manager at a company in Edenvale and decided to be a DJ full-time,” said Anil.

“The journey hasn’t always been easy because there are a lot of DJs, but you must be original so you can be remembered.”

The father of two has been featured on a set for HeavyK and MS Cosmo.

In 2019, he was also selected as one of the Top 10 qualifiers for the H20 Decade2Decade festival, and was booked to play at the H2O 2020 NYE event, but the festival was however postponed due to Covid-19.

“It has been difficult for DJs since the pandemic started but I have been practising my craft online since April and I’m hoping things will get better this year,” he said.

Anil’s advice for upcoming DJs is that you need to be hard-headed and not give up easily.
“Be innovative to break through all the hard barriers.

“I thank everyone who has supported me through this journey especially my two daughters and to my fans. I will always keep you happy on the dance floor.”
