Young musicians reach for the stars

The concert is held to showcase the students’ talent and achievements.

Duerell’s School of Music, Drama and Dance hosted its annual Extravaganza – Music Stars in the Park on November 21 in Fairleads.

The concert is held to showcase the students’ talent and achievements.

The guest judges were Leanne Dlamini (singer-songwriter), Yahto Kraft (The Voice of South Africa) and Celia Zietsman.

Yahto also performed on the day. The master of ceremonies was Kim Jansen, who engaged with the audience between performances.

The learners played various instruments, such as the accordion, classical guitar, drums, piano and the violin, and there were vocals and band performances in various age groups.

A prize-giving ended the concert and each student was given a participation certificate and awards.

The overall winners were:

• Band section: Riva-Jade Wilkes, Vivienne Hussey and Akilan Moonsamy
• Vocals (nine to 11): Daniella Wridgway
• Drama: Diego Lopes
• Violin: Jana Bezuidenhout
• Guitar with vocals: Megan Kok
• Piano beginners: Romi Swanevelder and Gabriella Catsoulacos
• Vocals (five to eight years): Caleb Obermeyer
• Drums intermediate: Akilan Moonsamy
• Piano intermediate: Pablo Postma
• Vocals (15 to 17 years): Deanne Vaz
• Guitar-Finger picking: Joshua Hamilton
• Vocals (12 to 14 years): Riva-Jade Wilkes
• Drums: Diego Teixeira.
