Blind author publishes first book

This is one of many books for the author.

Being blind has got nothing on Catherine Ford who wrote her first book in three months and is hoping to release it before the end of the year.

“The Transfer is a young adult romance. Ashlyn Cooper is in her final year of high school. She is pretty much average when it comes to academics and sports. She has a good group of friends and is happy with her life,” the 32-year-old said, explaining the plot of the book.

“That is until The Transfer swaggers into her life. Enter Jamie Russle, tall, dark and full of mischief. With one look, he turns Ashlyn’s neat little world upside down and he drags his best friend Craig Morgan into the thick of things. Follow Ashlyn as she deals with friend drama, parents drama and romance drama. She will learn the true meaning of friendship and love.”

Catherine, who writes under the pseudonym, Kathryn Ford is also bipolar.

“Being blind, I sometimes battle with certain descriptions, especially if I’ve never touched the thing before. I also struggle with facial expressions and body language. Luckily, I have a husband and parents who are more than willing to help out.

“Being bipolar brings about its own challenges. Sometimes I am so depressed I can’t get out of bed. Or I’ll go on a mania trip where I can’t focus on anything. This disrupts my writing.”

The title The Transfer derives from the story of Jamie transferring from a school in Cape Town.

“Some of the book comes from my own experiences in high school.

“I’m not sure what made me write it. One day, I just picked up my laptop and began to write.

“I wasn’t sure at first where things were going, but, three months later, I had a draft of a book that I was excited to work on.”

Catherine lives in Boksburg but is no stranger to Benoni.

“I attend the Northfield Methodist Church.”

She has many more books in the pipeline but those interested in reading her first novel can find it on Amazon, Kindle, Lulu and her Facebook page when it is released.

“I just knew I had a story that I wanted to tell and share with everyone.”
