Highlands Mountain Retreat_ A Great Wilderness Escape

Highlands Mountain Retreat is best suited to travellers who love the outdoors and are looking to experience something very unique.

Retreating to the mountains, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, is best described as nothing but magical. It has been said that the sound of nature and the crisp mountain air is beneficial to the well-being of the mind, body, and soul.

Perched at the top of the rolling foothills of the Maluti Mountains in Golden Gate Highlands National Park, Highlands Mountain Retreat is a quaint camp that offers eight log cabins tucked away in the hills. Gorgeous fireplaces offer a cozy setting during the winter months, whilst the private outdoor verandas with braai facilities are loved on those warm summer evenings.  Highlands Mountain Retreat is best suited to travellers who love the outdoors and are looking to experience something very unique.

The attraction to the Golden Gate National Park is undoubtedly the untouched wilderness that awaits to be explored. There are seven hikes offered in the Golden Gate National Park, each of them winding around the gorgeous orange sandstone cliffs that glisten with the sun. The walks range from forty-five minutes to four hours, and explore the gorges and vast grasslands. There is also the option to do an overnight hike and a guided hike to Cathedral Cave. Other activities offered at the retreat include horse riding, tennis, and swimming.

A highlight during a stay at Highlands Mountain Retreat is the vulture’s restaurant: a bird hide where carcasses are left for vultures to feed on so that guests can admire them up-close.

The Basotho Cultural Village is another highlight during a stay at the mountain retreat, taking you on an incredible discovery of their colorful homes and their way of life. You will get to taste their brewed sorghum beer, traditional dishes, and interact with a  traditional healer who will offer you insight into their spiritual beliefs.

Staying at Highlands Mountain Retreat offers you the opportunity to partake in a number of other activities that are offered just outside the park. These activities include golfing, shooting, arts and crafts, white water rafting, quad and motorbike trails, zip lining, paintball, archery, fly fishing, game farms, rock art, day trips to Lesotho, Katse Dam, snowboarding, and skiing.
