Aunty Sheila doesn’t disappoint at Emperors Palace

Pleased with the performance, the show was well received by those who attended.

Hilarity, music and dance filled the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace recently as the cast of Aunty Sheila – You’re Hired! ensured no seat in the house was left without a laugh on the night.

Aunty Sheila, a brand and character created and played by Theshen Naicker of Sheila Power Productions, has become a household name in Indian communities.

Highlighting challenges, day-to-day issues faced by the community and a way of life many can relate to, the show ensured those present, from the younger generation to elderly folk, could identify with the scenes acted out.

Still keeping to tradition, the queen of straight talk is known to embrace the Tamil religion significantly and is not one to discredit her heritage.

Tamil phrases the audience were well versed with, often pertaining to insult and directness, brought a fresh dimension to the comedic element.

Performing for her adoring supporters and fans, Aunty Sheila goes on a quest to find the profession that suits her best.

Being outspoken and “telling it like it is”, leads to hilarious consequences and life lessons being learnt by all.

From a bridal outfitter assistant to a funeral director and then a lawyer, Aunty Sheila tackles perceptions, prejudice, narrow-mindedness, misconceptions regarding the LGBT community, gender inequality and highlights the importance of love, tolerance, an emphasis on spirituality and acceptance of all.

Characters such as Romi The Sweetheart (Christintha Moodley), Ashnie The Evil Enemy (Sheena Ramouthar) and The Player (Keval Maharaj) graced the stage with spellbinding performances.

Providing entertainment in a segment played out for just over two hours, a mix of Bollywood tunes and modern Western chart toppers during intervals was an experience much to the delight of the audience.

The production concluded with Aunty Sheila’s rendition of I Will Always Love You, followed by a farewell to the audience by the cast and crew shortly afterwards.
