Broadway hit arrives in Benoni

The show features familiar names from the Bible including Jesus Christ, Judas Iscariot, Mary Magdalene and Pontius Pilate, amongst others.

Protea Stage Production held the opening of Jesus Christ Superstar the musical at Tom Newby Primary School on Sunday, November 18.

The musical, which is deemed an Andrew Lloyd Webber Broadway sensation, is a classic rock opera which drew in significant crowds on opening day.

Thespians relay the story of the last week of Jesus’ life and the events that led up to his crucifixion.

Songs from the musical masterpiece include well known numbers such as ‘Superstar’, ‘Could We Start Again’ and ‘Everything’s Alright’ and showcase the popularity of Jesus from an unconventional perspective.

Michael Brownhill from Protea, who also plays Judas in the musical, said the show was Protea’s first big scale production in a while.

“The musical is directed and choreographed by Nicole Truby, with assistant direction by Ross Woodall and musical direction by Joan Truby,” said Brownhill.

Children from Kids Haven were also invited to watch the musical by Protea.

“The committee always invites Kids Haven to see some of the plays we put together,” said Protea’s Carole Worrell.

“Different children come through and we give them a little party pack when they attend.

“We are a community-based play company and we want to enrich our community with cultural as well as social goodness,” she said.

The show will run every weekend until Sunday, December 2, with shows every Friday and Saturday at 7.30pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2.30pm.

Tickets are on sale at R80 for adults and R60 for children and pensioners.
