Listen: World Hepatitis Day July 28

Dr Faieza Sahid of Life The Glynnwood Hospital in Benoni spoke to reporter Rivelle Govindsamy about Hepatitis B and C and how it can be treated.

Dr Faieza Sahid (MBBCh WITS) is a specialist physician and a sub-specialist for infectious diseases at the Life Glynwood and provided insight of the disease ahead of World Hepatitis Day on July 28.

The City Times asked Dr Faieza questions about the disease.

• What is hepatitis?

Simply speaking, it is inflammation of the liver.

 

• How many people would you estimate have hepatitis in South Africa?

Approximately 3.4 million people are infected.

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) is 100 times more infectious than HIV and 10 times more infectious than the hepatitis C virus (HCV).

It is a burden of low income countries and mortality is increased with HIV co-infection.
