Relief as Benoni Child Welfare receives its subsidy

The community can still help to replenish the organisation's critical supplies.

Director of the Greater Benoni Child Welfare Elsie Labuschagne said the NPO received their subsidy from the Department of Social Development (DSD) on May 25.

“The department kept to their word and now things can get back to normal.

“I can sleep again knowing that everything is sorted.”

Labuschagne thanked the community for all their help and support.

This comment came after about two months of non-payment of their subsidy.

The NPO closed their doors and participated in a peaceful protest on May 21 outside the DSD offices in Benoni.

On May 24 the Gauteng Department of Social Development MEC Nandi Mayathula-Khoza held a media briefing to address the issue.

Mayathula-Khoza stated that the delay was due to a meeting that the department had with NPOs, where 2017/2018 audit findings indicated that many of the NPOs did not comply with the NPO Act as they are required to.

“I explained that we thus had to go through a process of vetting each one of them afresh before signing the Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for the 2018/19 financial year,” she said.

Mayathula-Khoza said the Greater Benoni Child Welfare was kept informed when to expect payment which would be processed on May 22.

On May 29 Mayathula-Khoza said out of the 2 029 that have signed SLAs, 1 284 was paid by yesterday.

“We have a payment run of 107 NPOs to the value of R21-million being processed today.”

“This will leave us with only 638 NPOs still to be paid.”

The MEC said the department appreciates the co-operation of stakeholders in the NPO sector who were responding positively to their request for compliance.

“I am happy that the process is running fast and smoothly so far,” she said.
