Sibikwa brings Africa Month to life

Drumming to joy.

Doof, doof, doof – can you hear that sound in your head? That was the sound which kicked off a trail of beautiful music at Sibikwa recently.

The arts centre, in Liverpool Road, celebrated Africa Month by offering beginners and advanced drummers the opportunity to explore the wondrous rhythms with an interactive drumming experience.

According to social media spokesperson Kgomotso Mashilo, the drum is the heartbeat of most African communities and has been an intrinsic part of African life for countless generations.

“Drums are also all about communication and making music – two essential characteristics of community life,” Mashilo said.

The Live in Beat workshop also had a response session and during the afternoon the participants took to the stage to showcase their body percussion, African dance and Sepedi drumming they’d learnt on the day.
