Mrs SA semi-finalist conquers her fear by entering competition

The finals will take place in November

Lakefield resident Sharlene Correira (39) is a top-100 semi-finalist in the Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa competition.

The top 25 finalists who will be chosen to compete in the pageant will be announced at the Annual Charity Ball on June 29 at Emperors Palace.

The finals will take place in November.

What made you enter the competition?

SC: I entered as a way of conquering my fears

BCT: Apart from it being a fear, would you say it’s been one of your dreams?

SC: Yes, it has always been a dream. When I was a little girl I remember watching the Miss South Africa pageant where Michelle Bruce won and I thought to myself, ‘I can do that.’

BCT: What makes the competition different from other competitions?

SC: It’s more than just a title or a crown, it is about making a difference and I feel that I am destined to do something for the greater world.

BCT: How has the journey been since you started the competition?

SC: It’s been exciting and scary.

I’ve grown and learnt a lot about myself. I’ve learnt that it’s not always about what people think about you.

BCT: What are some of the projects you are currently working on?

SC: Well, now I’m busy trying to raise money for the Benoni SPCA. We are collecting paper from different companies to recycle and the proceeds will go to the SPCA.

BCT: What inspires you?

SC: I am inspired by seeing someone who has been through a lot, still carrying on.

I admire people who are go-getters, people who rise above any challenge they might be facing.

BCT: How does your family feel about you being a part of the competition?

SC: My husband (Ricardo) is very supportive and my son thinks I will win.

BCT: How do you manage to stay healthy and looking the way you do?

SC: I lost 11kgs by running 3.5kms every day and by eating a balanced diet

BCT: Tell us about being a mother, a wife and a career driven woman.

SC: Time management is very important you need to make time for every aspect of your life.

BCT: What would you do if you win?

SC: I would want to leave something memorable behind.

I live by the quote: ‘You are not what happened to you, you are what you choose to become.’
