Protea production had audience giggling

Protea Stage Productions is showcasing the all-time favourite Disney movie, Mulan until June 25 and it is one not to be missed.

The story takes place in ancient China and follows a young lady, Mulan (Fiona Brown), who finds she has no purpose in life.

The production, which is directed by Michael Brownhill and Camilla Kinman (also musical director) and choreographed by Nicole Truby, sees to plenty giggles, music and a stir of emotions unveiling with each scene.

The production begins with Shan Yu (Juan Oosthuizen) and the Hun archers walking through the crowd towards the stage to inform the emperor that he has come to take over China.

The change of scene then introduces the leading lady, Mulan herself, preparing to meet the dress maker and the match makers who will groom her to become a perfect bride.

The meeting is disastrous and leaves Mulan feeling hopeless again, until her father, Fa Zhou (Bruce Pieterse) is summoned to fight in the war against Shan Yu and Mulan takes his place unbeknownst to him.

The production takes a turn for the funny when she is introduced to Mushu (Craig Zuma) who pretends to be her guardian along with Crikee (Roxy Koehn) who pretends to be lucky.

Together, the three set out to training where Mushu and Crikee teach Mulan how to act, eat, talk and walk like a man. Their efforts land her in trouble, but also catch the attention of the captain, Shang (Devon Kinman).

Mulan eventually fits in with the men, fights in the war, finds love with her prince charming and saves China.

The production follows the movie closely but has added songs, as well as a tune from another classic Disney movie, The Lion King, adapted for Mulan, of course.

Tickets can be booked from Brownhill (064 150 8381) or via tickets@proteastage.org.za.

The show will be held at Tom Newby School on Friday at 7.30pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2.30pm.

Ticket prices are R70 for adults and R40 for seniors and under 12s.
