Homeboys playing in hometown

Our homeboys, Crystal Park, are taking to the stage at The Festival @ St Dunstan’s on May 13 and cannot wait to rock your socks off.

The Festival, which is in partnership with the City Times, is only a few weeks away and Crystal Park is on board this year.

The band members are Steve East (bass and vocalist), Joe Cole (acoustic guitar and vocalist), Fred van der Merwe (electric guitar, banjo and ukelele), Calvin “The Kid” van der Merwe (drums) and Bradley Wooldridge (percussion and harmonica).

“We heard about last year’s event and what a success it was, so when Paul Smith asked us to play, there was just no way that we could say no,” said East.

“Oh yes, and The Kid wanted to finally brag to his mates that he’s shared a stage with Locnville.”

The band was formed in 2010 shortly after local indie rock band The Hellphones broke up that same year.

“Some of the guys wanted to continue making music, but with a different sound,” East said.

“Fred, Joe and ex-vocalist, Tenn Elliot, wanted to write alternative country music as they felt there was a gap for it in the SA music scene.”

Together, the band plans to give fans some head-boppin’ foot-stompin’ good tunes.

Crystal Park’s plans for the future are to release their third album.

“We love playing at festivals and would love to play at some that we haven’t before,” East added.

“We’ve played at three Oppikoppi Festivals, twice at Mieliepop and three times at Otterlake Festival.

“We also played at STRAB, Splashy Fen, SA Bike Festival at Kyalami (with a second time coming up this year) as well as smaller one day fests like The Green Craft Beer Festival, Lusito Land and many more.”

The band also said that all festival goers need to respect other festival goers, bring sunblock, drink water and dance.

Tickets for the festival can be bought from the St Dunstan’s College on 54 Millburn Street, the Benoni City Times offices in the Northmead Square on the corner 14th Avenue and O’Reilly Merry Street, Mugg & Bean at The Square at Farrarmere and Wakaberry in the Oakfields Shopping Centre.

General access ticket prices are R150 and tickets sold on the day at the gates will cost R200.

For backstage VIP tickets are R400, but VIP tickets bought on the day will be R500.

Parking is R50.

The gates for the family fun-filled festival happening at the St Dunstan’s College on May 13 will open at 1pm.
