Local teacher wants to inspire others

Benoni High School teacher Heloise Gevers is in the top 100 of the Mrs South Africa semi-finalist.

Gevers said she was surprised when she received the news of being part of the top 100.

“I honestly didn’t think I would make the cut, I didn’t tell anyone when I entered until I was announced as a semi-finalist,” she said.

The 26-year-old wants to inspire and empower others.

“As a teacher and counsellor, I deal with young women on a daily basis and I have realised that teenagers are in desperate need of good role models,” said Gevers.

“This platform will give me an opportunity to inspire them to dream big and to stand up for what is right.”

Should she be crowned Mrs SA, she wants to inspire women to dream big.

“I hope to break down the negative stigma about marriage in the 21st century and be an example of a happy functional marriage.”

The mathematics, engineering graphics and design teacher said she has a heart for education and hopes to promote quality education in the country.

When asked how she balances being a driven career woman and wife, she said: “I believe that if you want something done, ask a busy person.

“My diary is everything, I try to prioritise and plan each day ahead.”

Gevers is studying towards a master’s degree in leaner support, guidance and counselling at the University of Pretoria.

The Kempton Park resident said through this journey she hopes to live by her motto “be the water that makes others blossom”.

Gevers will host a cancer awareness run at Hoërskool Brandwag on April 8 in honour of all the teachers and students who are fighting cancer, with proceeds going to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa).

The top 25 in the Mrs South Africa pageant will be announced on April 28.
