Matriculant Karishma Magan sometimes sacrificed sleep and going to social events, but it paid off in the form of eight distinctions.

Magan was a learner at Ashton International College and participated in the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) exams.

The Actonville resident said she's ecstatic and grateful for achieving her goals, but was somewhat disappointed at missing a distinction in her ninth subject, advanced programme (AP) mathematics, by one percentage point.

The paper for AP mathematics was sent to be remarked.

The 18-year-old distinguished herself in accounting, Afrikaans, business studies, English, geography, life orientation, mathematics and physical science.

“I worked consistently throughout the year with the support of my teachers and family,” said Magan.

“Past papers and extra lessons were also a great help.

“Time management was my greatest challenge, because of my two extra self-study subjects (business studies and AP mathematics).

“I also had to dedicate a lot of my time to my head girl duties.”

Beside her studies, Magan performed in the Eisteddfods and raised funds for charity as a debutante.

The matric graduate plans to study actuarial science at the University of Witwatersrand this year.

She was simultaneously nervous and excited to start the new chapter in her life.

“I enjoy mathematics and business studies – and these subjects will allow me to follow a career in the business field,” she added.

When asked what advice she would give to this year’s matriculants, Magan said: “Try to find a balance and persevere when studying.”

“The dictionary is the only place, where success comes before work.

“Hard work definitely pays off.”
