Sibikwa celebrates women

Sibikwa Arts Centre, on Liverpool Road, will host the third leg of Thunya Lerole, its dance season, on Saturday (October 22).

The seven pieces will be staged at the Dance Factory, in Newtown, from 1.30pm to 5pm.

In this, the year that marks the 60th anniversary of the Women’s March to Pretoria, Sibikwa decided to showcase the talent of Mzansi’s young female choreographers.

The aim is to focus on young women and girls initiating special short skills vocational training and creating new plays, relevant to and about girls and young women.

The programme is:

•Emma Tollman with “Still Breathing”, subtitled “Baby Doll In Traumland”, which is a performance piece that explores the female body as Baby Doll, one of society’s disfigured products of the male gaze.

•Jabu Siphika and Zinhle Nzama (Flatfoot Dance Company) with Ukubana Ngokwami, a duet dance journey into questions of self and identity.

•Lerato Lipere with “Man-Made World”, an experimental exploration of music and dance.

• Katlego Mogola brings the performance piece “Last Supper”, a physical conversation about the power of dynamics, highlighting intersecting struggles of women.

• Qiniso Zungu with ”The Conversation within our bodies and souls”, a dance piece which revolves around challenging the stereotype of dance, about thick or big bodies not being considered an appropriate dance size.

•Nadine Joseph with “ID.Entity,” a multi-disciplinary work that probes the pertinent issue of masculinity in a South African context, with particular focus on masculinity in urban spaces.

•Lorin Sookool presents “BAD”, querying how we navigate the notion of feminism in this web-empowered, image-obsessed generation.

Guest performances by Moving Into Dance Mophatong’s Thenjiwe Soxokoshe with ‘koSoKU’ (straight jacket), a work that interrogates how the world looks at a woman, and Asanda Ruda with ”Kemet” (dark or black lands), which emphasises that being and becoming begins within yourself.
