Local muso impresses American songwriter

Local muso Dylan du Randt (19) was lost for words when he heard he won the right to sing a song written by veteran songwriter Alan Roy Scott.

Scott, who lives in Los Angeles, was at Quarterdeck Pub and Grill in Western Extension, to judge the performances of around 10 singers, most of whom sang three songs each, but it was du Randt who stole the show at Quarterdeck.

Scott has written songs for Celine Dion, Luther Vandross, Cyndi Lauper, Gloria Estefan, Roberta Flack, The Allman Brothers, to name a few.

His publisher in South Africa, Brentwood Park resident Lee Vaughn, said the prize is worth R20 000.

Scott will now write a song for du Randt, which will be recorded and produced by Roelof Bouwer, at In Tune Studios in Pretoria.

Du Randt performed three songs, with Kimon “Rayne” Candiotes supporting his soothing voice with the ukulele.

The youngster sang Atlas Hands, by Benjamin Francis Leftwich, his original called Pretty Downtown and an improv song.

“The level of talent is very high in this country,” Scott told the City Times.

“It is never the problem of talent, but the other issues, like society, geography and politics.”

Du Randt, who lives in the Benoni Agricultural Holdings, said he did not expect to win.

“I have never won anything in my life,” said du Randt.

“It just feels great to make my family proud, but more importantly myself.”
