Local two-piece band heads to Oppi

“We never thought we would play at Oppi. We’re just having fun,’’ said The Mitten Fits member Dave Stevens.

Oppikoppi is one of South Africa’s biggest music festivals, and will take place in Limpopo over several days in August.

The festival started off focusing mainly on rock music. However, over time different genres have been added and now it’s host to a diverse range of music.

This year Oppikoppi will be welcoming a two-piece acoustic band from Benoni know as The Mitten Fits.

Originally a five-piece band, they started off as a “once-off’’ to help someone out at a fund-raiser.

Now, the band consists of Jolene Holder, who plays the ukulele and sings, and former Benonian Dave, who is on guitar and vocals.

The duo are excited to be playing at Oppi.

“It was unbelievable for a while. We have been going there [Oppikoppi] all this time and now we are playing there,” said Jolene,

“It’s a real honour.’’

The band was noticed by a talent scout who had been hearing a lot of great things from Benoni and offered them a chance to play.

The Mitten Fits have shared stages with fellow Benoni band Crystal Park, Owl and Simone and South African indie band Short Straw, just to name a few.

Dave said what he loves about Benoni bands is that they are “unpredictable’’.

Benoni has a lot of “gritty rock ‘n roll,’’Jolene added.

The band’s next gig will be at Oppi on Saturday, August 6, at 12pm, at the TopBar.
