Desmond and the Tutus head to Benoni

The Festival @ St Dunstan’s will headline some of the most popular bands and DJs in the country, including the jokingly-named Desmond and the Tutus.

They don’t actually have a member called Desmond, but Nic and the Cages, or Craig and the Fergusons, would not have had quite the same ring to it.

Shane, Doug, Nic and Craig will bring their energising sound to Benoni when they get on stage during The Festival @ St Dunstan’s, in May.

According to their Facebook page, the group’s genre has been dubbed kwêla-indie-punk, which they’ve been playing for the past 10 years.

This unique-sounding South African band has played across the world, including on a tour in the UK, Sweden, France and Japan.

In France they played among Johnny Clegg, The Mahotella Queens, and Blk Jks at the South African themed Rio Loco in Toulouse, 2010.

Closer to home, the Desmonds have played for deaf people at Joburg’s Bassline, where there was a vibrating dance floor and interpretive dancer.

The four musicians started in 2005 and released their debut album, Tuckshop three years later.

Since then they have produced two more full-length albums and a number of popular singles and extended plays (EP)

The festival will be held at St Dunstan’s College, in Rynfield, on May 7.

The list of confirmed bands for the event has steadily grown since the announcement of Gangs of Ballet, DJ Voltrex and Moloi.Hesse Band.

Johnny Apple, DJ Fresh and Timo ODV have since also joined the ranks of the entertainment for the day and Bongi Mthombeni will be the master of ceremonies.

Event promoter Paul Smith said tickets were expected to go on sale by Wednesday, March 2.

Tickets will be available at St Dunstan’s College, between 7am and 8am on Wednesdays and Fridays.

The Benoni City Times office, Wakaberry Oakfields (Northmead) and Harvey World Travel Benoni (Rynfield) will offer tickets on sale during working hours on weekdays.

The general entry tickets will be R100 each (children under six years enter for free), while the Golden Circle tickets will sell for R250 each and backstage VIP passes for R350 each.
