The burnt out transformer at the Rynfield substation caught fire on Friday morning, January 22. The fire caused power to be cut in several Benoni suburbs.

Large parts of Benoni were left without electricity since early Friday, following a fire at the Rynfield substation.
The fire resulted in four mini substations in Benoni to also catch fire.
The MMC, said: “Power has be restored to all affected communities.”
Xhakaza went on to say that the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality will put aside R20-million for the renewal of the substation and increase the capacity of electricity supply within Benoni.
He emphasized how the task teams managed to restore the problem in less than 24 hours.
“Investigations are being conducted to identify the cause of the transformer being burnt,” he said.
