South African jazz legend will heat up June

One of South Africa’s finest jazz exports, Grammy Award winning Jonathan Butler, is set to perform live in a one-night-only concert, as part of the Winter Jazz Festival, on June 12 and 13, at the Big Top at Carnival City.

Butler will perform on Saturday, June 13, the second night of the festival, and will be joined by jazz singer Oleta Adams and jazz saxophonist Euge Groove, from America.

Adams is the perfect foil for Butler, with her own brand of rhythm and blues music and soul, which should be a winner with local fans.

Making his South African debut, Euge Groove boasts nine studio albums and 13 number one hits and is no stranger to South African ears, as he has topped many local radio charts.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jonathan Butler to our stage as part of the Winter Jazz Festival,” said Michelle Smith, marketing manager at Carnival City.

“With two acclaimed global artists joining him, fans are promised an evening of superlative entertainment.”

Butler started his singing career at age seven, releasing his first album in 1973, which won him a Sarie Award the following year, at the age of 12.

He made history by being the first black artist to be aired on South African radio and earned three gold records during his career.

He has received a Grammy nomination for Best Rhythm and Blues Song for his popular hit, “Lies”.

In concert, Butler is a captivating and powerful performer, pouring his heart into selections from his immense catalogue.

Internationally acclaimed soul singer Musiq Soulchild will perform at the Winter Jazz Festival on Friday, June 12.

The American musician has a considerable fan base in South Africa, where his songs have enjoyed airplay on radio.
