Success for annual Sing for Joy concert

A glorious sound filled the air as a choir of 80 singers voiced lyrics in perfect synchronism, on Saturday (May 23).

Such was the atmosphere at the annual Sing for Joy concert, which was held in the St Dunstan’s Cathedral, Woburn Avenue, Benoni.

The theme this year was war and the show included songs from both world wars, as well as songs referring to war.

The performance included singers from various choirs around Benoni and the East Rand, including Northfield Methodist Church, St Boniface Church and more.

Guest performances included the St Dunstan’s Preparatory School Choir in the afternoon and St Dunstan’s College Choir in the evening, with the Benoni High School Pipe Band also making an appearance.

The concert was produced and directed by Malcolm and Janet Chalmers, from Germiston.

“This is the 13th concert, but in the last seven years we’ve split it into two shows, one in the afternoon, one in the evening,” said Margie Cary, from St Dunstan’s Music Foundation.

“The cathedral can accommodate about 300 people per show,” added Mike Cary, also from St Dunstan’s Music Foundation.

The concert is organised directly by St Dunstan’s Music Foundation, to raise much needed funds.

“We just love this, they are very well organised,” said Moira Penny, one of the singers in the choir.

The concert is not only a fundraiser, it also serves as a platform to promote the types of music showcased during the event.

“I think it’s still quite big and has a good future, especially for the older generation,” said Mary Coull, another singer in the choir.

“I’ve been in the pipe band for eight years, I’m tutoring the band at the school now,” said Waldo Zweep, snare drum player for the Benoni High School Pipe Band.

“I think this type of music is growing in South Africa, so it has a good future in terms of development.”
