Civilisation lost

Keith Rowe, of Rynfield, writes: When I was a young boy I liked to read stories of explorers hacking away through jungles and discovering traces of long gone civilisations.

In this present day, when I walk along Pretoria Road, the first sight I see on the corner of Pretoria Road and Lessing Street, is a gaping manhole, 3m deep, with no cover.

This is big enough for two people, side-by-side, to fall down.

This has been open for at least two years.

I hope you, the municipal authorities, will pay for any injuries that might happen to anyone who may fall down this hazard, as you will be held responsible for any injuries.

Then come the footpaths, overgrown with grass and giving only one person space to walk.

In the beginning the paths were approximately 1.5m wide.

The powers-that-be continue talking about job creation, but talk is very cheap, it seems.

The jobs are there, but we will be told that there is no money in the kitty.

Same old story.
