BCCI focuses on reducing business robberies

The Benoni Chamber of Commerce and Industries (BCCI) hopes to continue where it left off last year.

In addition to hosting several networking business meetings and organising an annual golf day in aid of charity, the chamber was also instrumental in ensuring that Benoni roads are clearly marked, and sped up the repairing of Tom Jones Street.

Chamber president Muhammad Essop said the chamber will, this year, work closely with the police and the CPF to reduce the number of business robberies and break-ins.

“We have already had a meeting with the new station commander, Brig Poobalan Subbiah, and he said there is room for improvement when it comes to lowering business crimes,” said Essop.

Essop said this is done to ensure that business does not move out of Benoni due to crime.

“There is a lot of positiveness about the new station commander, as he also promised police visibility all the time,” he said.

Essop added that the chamber will also engage with the Metro Police, to try to ensure that they don’t enforce the bylaws selectively.

“In most cases, businesses that pay rates and taxes are more prejudiced than those that trade freely,” he said.

Essop again appealed to businesses to join the chamber and express their views on how business could be improved.

The chamber offices has moved to the offices of the Benoni Publicity Association.
