Shoot-out on Pretoria Road

Five men were arrested on Pretoria Road this afternoon after a lengthy chase by the police.

The five suspects, one of whom was shot in the back, were arrested opposite Benoni Pets and Exotics, at around 1.30pm, on Thursday afternoon (February 6).

The men are believed to be behind the murder of a Pretoria man this morning, after they allegedly robbed a house in Lyttelton.

According to a Community Police Forum (CPF) member who was on the Pretoria Road scene, Lyttelton police chased the five suspects from Pretoria.

The men were driving a red Range Rover which was apparently hijacked in Ruimsig on January 15.

Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz said police in Lyttelton alerted the Crystal Park and Putfontein police of the chase.

Police cordoned off roads to apprehend the men.

Maritz said a shoot-out between the suspects, who are all believed to have been armed, started near the Shell Garage on Pretoria Road.

The men traveled down Pretoria Road and rolled their vehicle opposite Benoni Pets and Exotics.

Two of the suspects were taken to the Tembisa Hospital under police guard.

The three remaining men will be detained by the Crystal Park SAPS.

Police recovered TVs, cellphones, jewellery and laptops in the vehicle, believed to have been stolen in this morning (Thursday’s) robbery.

The men are suspected of being involved in three other house robberies this year.
