E-toll in six days

In just six days one of the most opposed projects in the country is expected to go live.

According to Sanral, the e-toll gantries installed around Gauteng highways will go live on December 3.

The e-toll has been met with fierce opposition from the day Sanral revealed its plans to implement the system.

Despite the implementation only being a formality and Sanral’s continued requests asking people to get tagged, many people are still up in arms and refuse to buy e-tags – despite the threat of penalties and legal action.
South African legal firm Findlay & Niemeyer Inc has offered a free defence to the first non-compliant e-toll road user, after the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) warned motorists that non-payers would be handed over to debt collectors.

The firm has said that the candidate they choose to back will be carefully selected to ensure that the issues presented by the e-tolls are present in the test subject’s case.

The candidate chosen will therefore not be the first non-compliant road user.

It remains to be seen how the public will react to the system once it goes live and once the first bills have been issued.
