Chaos reigns at Snake Road

Steve writes by email:

Perhaps some one could mention why the roads at the intersection of Morris and Pretoria roads, to the highway, are ridiculously laid out and must have been designed by an idiot.

From the Rynfield side, moving towards Morris Avenue, the right hand lane is designated to a right turn only, and this is only noticed when approaching the robot.

This means that no one can access the lane to the highway properly, without upsetting the people who were in the left hand lane, as they now are stuck and many vehicles just push their way into the left hand lane, just to access the straight lane to the highway, or go straight onto Snake Road towards Brakpan.

This morning I saw only two vehicles turn right.

What a waste of a lane this is.

In addition, there are multiple vehicles that travel down the service lane on the left, just to miss the congestion at the robots, but then cause more upset as the vehicles that were in the left lane push their way into Pretoria Road, become stuck and do not move at all.

This then becomes a major blockage of all lanes further back, right up to KFC!

Equally as idiotic, is the right hand lane onto the highway towards Boksburg.

This right hand lane suddenly ends on the on-ramp and traffic has to stop, on the on-ramp, to let traffic in from the left.

Again, major congestion!

Just as idiotic, is the off-ramp from Boksburg to Snake Road, turning left to Benoni.

The left hand lane again just suddenly becomes a left turn only lane — or hit the island.

This causes traffic to race from the robots in the left lane to try their hardest to beat all the other traffic to the junction, turn right, in front of all other traffic, and everyone has to brake hard, so as not to have an accident.

I cannot, for the life of me, understand why this has happened, but it has taken a very long time to cause this mess.

I have many friends and colleagues who use this intersection, and everyone I know complains about it every day.

It’s creating road rage, stress, frustration and danger to other road-users and is beyond any comprehension to all road-users who know how to drive and understand the rules of the road.

I sincerely look forward to your reply, or at least to having this printed in your newspaper, to get some kind of answer to rectify the situation.

On behalf of all frustrated drivers.
