Canoe marathon at Homestead Dam

The provincial team for the national championship at St Francis Bay on June 17 and 18 will be selected at the end of this competition.

The Ekurhuleni Kayak Club will host the Gauteng Canoe Marathon championship finals at Homestead Dam on June 3 and 4.

The event will start with the K1 races on Saturday, with the short 3.5km guppy race for children U12 and masters over 50 opening the proceedings at 08:30.

The marquee 21km marathon and 10km short race, which will feature the province’s top K1 paddlers, will follow at 09:15.

On Sunday, the K2 and K3 events will conclude the championship with the 3.5km guppy practice race testing the water at 08:30 and the 21km marathon and 10km races at 09:15.

According to the Gauteng Canoe Union’s public relations officer, Jennie Dallas, after this competition, the provincial team for the national championship held at St Francis Bay on June 17 and 18 would be selected.

Dallas added the paddlers prepared well for the provincials with inter-club competitions in the past couple of weeks.

“The paddlers have been training regularly in races hosted at Florida Lake, Wemmer Pan and Centurion Dam, as well as Germiston Lake and Emmarentia Dam. They were preparing for the provincial finals, which will determine if they will be in the team to represent Gauteng in the South African Championship in the Eastern Cape in mid-June,” said Dallas.
