Northerns invites schools to inaugural hockey festival

The Benoni Northerns Hockey Club (BNHC) will host an U11 and U13 boys and girls inaugural Youth Day Invitational tournament on June 16 at the AstroTurf pitch at Benoni Northerns Sports Club (BNSC).

The BNHC chairperson, Kyle Cameron, told the paper the tournament is part of their development plans to increase participation in the sport in Ekurhuleni.

Cameron invited schools from the region to be part of this event.

“The BNHC are lucky to have three AstroTurfs in a 500m radius of Benoni Northerns Sports Club. This year will be the first that this junior festival, and all the matches, will be played on these AstroTurfs,” he said.

Some matches will be played on the AstroTurf at Benoni High School and St Dunstan’s College.

The chairman said they anticipate about 32 schools, with entries limited to eight teams per gender and age group.

“This will be on a first-come-first-serve basis. Several schools within Benoni, Boksburg and Kempton Park were invited.”

Registration will be on June 16 from 07:00, with the opening ceremony at 07:30 .The tournament will start at 08:00 and conclude with the U13 girls’ final at 16:30.
