Rita van Wyk from Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) proved that age is nothing but a number when she clinched pole position in her category in the women’s 21km at the Sasol Secunda Marathon on February 18.
Van Wyk was the first master woman at the finish line, cutting the ribbon in 01:54:55. She finished 15th overall.
Van Wyk’s teammates David Gamede and Kevin Porobich also finished on the podium after clinching second place in their categories.
Gamede, 60, was the second grandmaster at the finish line, crossing in 01:28:31 to finish 19th overall.
The sexagenarian went into the race as defending champion in the 60+ category but Lucky Mthimunye proved too much of a challenge as he blitzed to the finish six minutes before Gamede.
Porobich won second place in the senior category after finishing the race in 01:28:31.
BAC’s Chris van Wyk claimed a third place in the grandmaster category in the 10km. He crossed the line at 57:46 behind winner Gideon Radebe and runner-up Johan Makhanya.
