The Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) is inviting locals, young and old, to enter the Kwikscaff Marathon, which takes place on March 5.

Online entries are open and close on February 27. Late entries will be available on March 1 from 15:00 to 19:00 and on March 4 from 09:00 to 17:00.

The marathon offers 42.2km, 21.1km, 10km and 5km fun run events.

Cobie Smith on her way to clinching the women’s title at the BNAC Marathon last year.

“We hope to see more Benonians enter our race this year. It’s a community-driven event, hosted and made possible by local people.

“It’s not only a race for runners with big goals such as qualifying for the Two Oceans or Comrades Marathons. It invites runners and walkers of all fitness levels to enjoy the great vibe and camaraderie of participating in a road race,” said organiser Kerry Webb.

Webb explained involvement in such events fosters a sense of pride and gives members an opportunity to engage each other on issues affecting that may be affecting their community.

“While we have members of our club marshalling, we have local businesses hosting water stations, EMPD and CPF support on the route, and CMS providing security. It reflects the spirit of community that still reigns in Benoni despite all the challenges that South Africans face as a society and as individuals.”

Willem Maphanga from Waterfall City Athletic Club won the men’s 42.2km last year.

She said she’s looking forward to seeing first-time runners at the finish line.

“Running or walking is more than just a way to get some exercise. They are healthy habits to keep for life.

“It’s always such a joy to see children or people just beginning their running journeys, experiencing a race and their love for running ignited.”
