Local takes part in first competitive race at Ride for Sight

"My legs are a little bit tired but I don't feel like been punished too badly".

Despite the nerves at the beginning, it was a worthwhile experience for Kirby Rae Russell who took part in her first competitive cycling event at the 34th Ride for Sight, on February 19, at Boksburg Stadium.

“As I heard the gun go off, I felt butterflies in my tummy,” she said.

The nerves were not caused by the hundreds of riders around her but by fear of the unknown.

“I was very nervous because it was my first race. I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know much about the route but it was a well-organised race.”

Besides her sore legs, she enjoyed the race.

The Rynfield resident completed the 62km race with ease. Although it was a bit windy and they had to contend with potholes and pools of water on the route, she enjoyed herself on the road.

“It was windy. It felt like someone was holding the back of your seat. But it was awesome. I loved it.

“The marshals and police were friendly. It was a huge benefit because I felt at peace knowing there were people around looking after us.”

Besides some stiffness in her legs, the mother of two’s training with her local cycling group came in her handy on her first competitive race.

“I did a 120km fun ride with our group in December, which was quite challenging. It was a lot more forgiving because you don’t feel you got time against you.

The Dis-Chem Ride for Sight attracted cyclists, young and old.

“Whereas with a race like this, your natural competitiveness comes out and you want to beat the cyclist in front of you. I could feel the pressure was on.”

Russell advised those who are planning to race in their first competitive event to follow the rules and most importantly, to have fun.

“Follow the rules because riding at speeds of 30km per hour, you really have to concentrate and be aware of your surroundings.

“Have fun. At the end of the day, it’s not about training and racing. It’s all about the effort and interacting with people. Drink your water, get a good night’s rest on the eve of the race and maybe enter with a friend to take photos and enjoy the route,” she said.
