Boksburg and Benoni athletes kicked off the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) track and field season with a bang after claiming top three positions in their events at the first meeting at Germiston Stadium on January 14.

Despite the hot conditions, these athletes’ performances were among some of the most outstanding on the day.

Young Benoni High Athletic Club’s Kaitlyn Mackay came second in the girls’ U16 3 000m, crossing the line in 11:03:02 while teammate Matthew Mackay was third in the men’s U18 5 000m.

The Benoni Northerns Athletics Club’s Moetlo Sefoka jumped 1.70m to win gold in the boys’ U16 high jump.

The Boksburg Athletic Club returned with five podium finishes. The peak of the athletes was Divine Mavungu and Fabio de Klerk who finished first in the men’s U18 100m and men’s U20 javelin throw.

Mavungu stormed to the finish in 11.24 seconds while De Klerk threw a distance of 57.07m for the gold.

Donovan Jansen van Vuuren was third in the men’s U18 200m while Pieter Moller finished in a time of 15.24 seconds to finish second in the men’s U18 hurdles.

Melcolm Faber finished in 01:07 to win a bronze medal in the men’s U18 400m hurdles

“The very impressive turnout at the first meeting provides the federation with a positive impression that this is going to be one exciting season for our athletes and spectators,” said CGA GM Mandla Radebe.

CGA Track and Field chairperson Maggie Dicks said she looks forward to seeing more competitive athletes for the province to have a strong team at the national championships.
