Badminton players’ olympic qualification campaign gains momentum

They now head to the South Africa International in Cape Town from December 1 to 4.

The Eastern Gauteng Badminton Association’s Deidrè Jordaan, Amy Ackerman and Jarred Elliot’s bid to boost their world rankings to participate in the 2024 Olympics in France received a major boost.

The trio won their respective disciplines at the Botswana International in their Road to Paris (RTP) campaign.

Deidrè and Amy won the women’s doubles after beating the team of Lorna Bodha and Kobita Dookhe from Mauritius.

Jarred and Amy beat Adham Hakem Elgamel and Doha Hany from Egypt to win the mixed doubles.

In the men’s doubles final, Jarred and his partner Robert Summers from the Free State won a silver medal after losing to Artur Niyazov and Dmitriy Panarin.

At the Zambia International from November 17 to 20, Amy and Deidrè won a silver medal in the women’s doubles. Jarred and Amy also won a silver medal in the mixed doubles.

Road to Paris programme

The RTP is a programme by the Badminton Confederation Africa, which has identified the most promising badminton players to qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris.

They will participate in several African, Pan-American and other international tournaments to boost their Badminton World Federation rankings.

To qualify for the Olympics, the players need to sit at the summit of the continental rankings in their disciplines and be in the top 50 in the world.
