ISU to launch World Ice Skating Day

Its mission is to reunite ice skating professionals, amateurs, beginners and newcomers to break social, economic and cultural boundaries

The International Skating Union (ISU) will launch a one-day global festival dedicated to ice skating to be held annually on the first Sunday of December.

World Ice Skating Day (WISD) is the first annual festival celebrating ice skating all over the world through multiple events taking place simultaneously on December 4.

Its mission is to reunite ice skating professionals, amateurs, beginners and newcomers to break social, economic and cultural boundaries and to ultimately encourage greater inclusion, youth involvement and future development of all ice skating disciplines.

The key objectives are to make ice skating sports accessible to everyone in a fun and safe environment – for first-timers, amateurs, professionals or retired competitive skaters – by creating a memorable experience for the entire family and sharing the passion for the sport, especially that magical gliding feeling so unique to Ice Skating.

President of the South African Figure Skating Association, Ricardo Jacobs said he was proud to announce South Africa is excited to participate in the first World Ice Skating Day.

“The SAFSA inspires all people in South Africa to embrace the joy of figure skating for life and I want to encourage and challenge all South Africans to join us at the Tri Ice rinks in Gauteng, Pretoria and Durban on December 4, 2022, from 09:30 to 11:30 and take advantage of the half-price special entry fee.”

If you are in Ekurhuleni, you can celebrate World Ice Skating Day at Festival Mall Ice Rink in Kempton Park.
