FPL legends guide team to tournament glory

The team won all their round-robin and knockout matches to advance to the finals where they won 2-0 to win the competition

The Gauteng Legends FC U12 team was crowned the winners of the NXTGEN Tournament held in Emmarentia in September.

The legends won all their round-robin and knockout matches to advance to the finals where they won 2-0 to win the competition.

The team comprised players from different regions in the province, including Benoni.

The team is led by Benoni’s Adam Loonat and Yunus Karolia. They are childhood friends who started playing football at the age of six.

According to Loonat, recruitment was done by ex-professionals from the old Federation Professional League (FPL). Loonat added that through the club they want to revive football in areas in the province where the sport was once a beacon of hope for many.

“Through the Gauteng Federation Legends, networking plans are afoot to allow aspiring footballers to pursue their careers,” he said.

“Through guidance from coaches, the players knitted with aplomb. Amazing talent emerged, represented by players of diverse backgrounds,” Loonat added.

NXTGEN hosted this tournament to allow young and aspiring footballers to showcase their talent to international scouts from clubs such as FC Barcelona, Alaves and Fuego FC among others.
