EKB claims colts and finnies title

The competition saw novice bowlers from Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, Sables, Vereeniging and Munies invited to showcase their skills on the green.

Ekurhuleni Bowls claimed the Colts and Finnies bowling trophy after accumulating 72 points to win the competition held at Kempton Park Bowling Club on September 10 and 11.

The competition had novice bowlers from Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, Sables, Vereeniging and Munies invited to showcase their skills on the green.

According to Chantal Hotto of EKB Bowls, the purpose of the competition was to allow up-and-coming bowlers to showcase their growth and development in the sport.

“The essence of this prestigious bowling event is to identify the future of South African bowling talent in Gauteng, as well as to build on and improve bowling relationships within the districts,” she said.

Hotto said the Covid-19 pandemic affected the growth and development of up-and-coming bowlers severely.

“With lockdown and Covid restrictions, the sport of bowls across the country was impacted detrimentally because there were no competitions, causing a lethargic growth of newcomers to the sport during this time.

“With relief in restrictions, competitions are on the go again, allowing clubs and bowlers to play against each other, thus growing the sport and the level of excellence.”

She added that the district was proud to host the event.

“The Ekurhuleni district selected a group of male and female novices from several clubs in the district including Northmead, Avion, Delville, Alberton, Benoni Country Club, Edenvale, Modderbee, Brackenhurst and Kempton Park to compete against other districts.

“The event boasted some superb bowling talent during the two days, consisting of more than 100 up-and-coming bowlers, as each district engaged in the battle of the best shots.

“In the end, it was the EKB team who took the cup and brought home the gold, with JBA district in second place.
