‘League a marathon’

Northerns are now third on the log on 39 points, three behind leaders Luso Africa and Sporting who are tied on 42 points. Old Bens are sixth on 33 points.

Benoni Northerns Football Club coach Enrique Juanas-Uriol said the Eastern Super League is not won in May as it’s a marathon following their 3-0 defeat of Old Bens on August 20.

Juanas-Uriol’s last taste of defeat in the league was over two months ago against Old Bens at Currin. They haven’t lost in 13 matches and their derby win catapulted them to second on the log.

“Today was a huge result for us, a must-win game, not only because of the importance of local derby but to stay in contention for league honours and in celebration of our sports club’s 50th anniversary this year,” said Juanas-Uriol.

“We have been on a fantastic run of late, undefeated in our last 12 matches whereas Old Bens have lost their last four games, which includes a cup semi-final.

“Our message to the boys building up to the game and in the change room before the start was to go out there and enjoy yourselves. It was about feeling no pressure, and believing they are the better team. Embrace the occasion and huge crowd. Do your thing, work hard for one another, and keep your focus and concentration at all times.

“Make amends for your last league loss which was actually to Old Bens, when we weren’t able to show our true worth due to numerous injuries and suspensions to key players.”

Knowing the importance of the tie, Juanas-Uriol told his players to stick to their game plan and take their opportunities.

“It wasn’t pretty, but an efficient and effective display that got the job done. Yes, Old Bens had their chances, but unfortunately for them they weren’t able to take them and it cost them dearly.

“We were the superior team in my opinion on the day. We controlled all aspects. They seemed to run out of ideas when they had the ball and we kept our shape.

“We were the more positive and attacking side. We also missed a couple of clear chances that could have made the score line more ominous. The key for me was our ability to hold the ball, and make those quality runs and passes that allowed us to get behind and penetrate their defence, leading to goal-scoring opportunities.

“Although in the latter part of the game tiredness kicked in and we lost our shape and the game became more open, our defenders did their job. All in all, it was a comprehensive win to set the record straight.”

Northerns are now third on the log on 39 points, three behind leaders Luso Africa and Sporting who are tied on 42 points. Old Bens are sixth on 33 points.

“Congratulations and well done to our players who made it happen on the pitch. All accolades go to them. A big thank you to our club and our members for their support. We wish Old Bens all the best and good luck for the remainder of the season.”
