ERK paddlers win Ice Breaker race

They won the 21km race in 01:25:16.

The East Rand Kayak (ERK) Club top paddlers Michael Stewart and Pieter Engelbrecht won the Ice Cracker main race at Homestead Dam on July 20.

Stewart and Engelbrecht, who are preparing for the ICF World Marathon Championships in Croatia next month, finished the 21km race in 01:25:16 to clinch the win.

Their ERK teammates Liam Stewart and Jonathan Nel were fifth overall and third senior age category. Mike Barry and Warren Edwards were 13th in 01:53.

The event included the guppies (U12) 4km race, 12km short course race and the main 21km race for the elite paddlers.

Helen Jansen van Vuuren from Victoria Lake Canoe Club in Germiston won the 12km race in 53:10, while the ERK’s Vallon Kupferberg and partner Connor John Puntis were second in the K2 race in 57:58. Chris Martin was third in the K1 race.

Centurion 9 miler

Michael and Engelbrecht continued their world championships preparation with another win at the Centurion Canoe Club 9 Miler event at Rietvlei Dam on July 27.

They won the 18km race in 01:20:51 for their second successive victory.

Barry and Nel completed the race in 01:31 while Liam and Tye Wood crossed the line in 01:33. Johan Grabe finished the K1 race in 01:41 and Bianca Grabe with her partner Salmarie Pretorius won the women’s K2 12km race in 01:16.
