Benonians off to national cross-country champs

They will represent the province in the Athletics South Africa (ASA) cross-country championships next month.

The Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) has announced a squad of more than 200 runners to represent the province in the national cross-country championships at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in Gqeberha on September 16.

While the squad includes familiar faces such as Andries Sesedi, Chris Mhlanga and Lebogang Phalula-Luthuli, around 16 Benoni runners will be among the athletes fighting for the province on the NMU sports fields on race day.

Eight athletes from the Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) will earn their provincial colours while the East Athletic Club (EAC) from Daveyton will have five runners in the team.

The Benoni High Athletic Club (BHAC) will be represented by two athletes while star runner, Kate van Jaarsveld from Nedbank, is also included in the provincial team.

“Once again congratulations to all selected athletes for the championships,” CGA said in a statement.
