Make us proud again, Boks

South Africans that they fully support the Springboks for the world cup.

“And united we shall stand, let us live and strive for freedom, in South Africa our land!”

The lyrics of the South African national anthem, sung by over 1000 Bok supporters, echoed through the OR Tambo International Airport as they wished the men in green and gold well for the Rugby World Cup before they left for Europe on August 12.

The Boksburg Advertiser was also there to greet the Springboks and be part of the action.

With people of all races dressed in green and gold dancing to guest artist Robbie Wessels’s Leeuloop, there was an air of excitement. After all, few things can unite South Africans like rugby.

Other artists such as Bernice West, Early B, Lloyd Cele and the Rasta Rebels also had the fans on their feet.

As the clock struck 14:15, it was time for the Boks to make their appearance. With cheers from the crowd, the 32 Springboks who are part of the tour group walked onto the stage.

Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa was also there to show his support.

Captain Siya Kolisi told supporters: “On behalf of us as a team and the management, we just want to say thank you to every one of you who are here. We feel your energy and support. I also want to emphasise that we are a strong and diverse team. We want to make you proud. We want to work hard and do everything in our power to defend our title,” said the captain as the crowd cheered him on.

Some of the fans had the opportunity to ask the players questions.

One of the questions was directed at scrumhalf Faf de Klerk: “What is your exact hair routine?”

Khomotso Maahlo and Edith Hlungwani show their support for Springboks.

“I’m not blessed with a lot of height, but I am blessed with good hair,” he joked.

Duane Vermeulen was asked how amped he is for the tournament: “The guys are going to give it their all. We’re looking forward to it.”

PJ Powers helped to close the Q&A session on a high note with a powerful performance of the song, World in Union.

Afterwards, the team took photos with their fans and signed autographs. Even though people pushed and shoved each other to get an opportunity to get a picture with their favourite players, the Boks were patient with their fans.

The Boks will first go to England, where they are set play two warm-up matches against Wales and the All Blacks.

On September 10, the Boks will compete against Scotland in their first group game.

This World Cup tournament will be held in France from September 8 to October 28.

The country stands squarely behind you, Bokke. Make us proud again. Bring the cup home.
