Call for nominations: Gauteng Sport Awards return for 2022

The 11th edition of the prestigious Gauteng Sport Awards launched by MEC Mbali Hlophe recently is officially opening the nomination period for this Year’s honours.

Gauteng residents and sporting bodies or federations are urged to nominate Gauteng based candidates in the 20 categories for consideration by September 16 at 16:00.

Candidates can only be nominated for their performance and achievements during the period of August 1 to 31.

The Gauteng Sport Awards is organised by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, supported by the provincial Sport Confederation.

The awards are aimed at honoring and recognising sports excellence across the province and to appreciate those whose passion for sport has been kept alive through their participation and contribution in local and international sporting events.

The independent adjudication panel, which consists of experienced individuals within sport, media and academia will decide on the finalists in each category from nominations received and will be announced a head of the gala ceremony in November.

The 20 categories for the 2022 Gauteng Sport Awards include Sport Personality of The Year which will be decided by public SMS vote.

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be decided by the MEC from nominations submitted for consideration, while this Year sees the Sports Team of the Year split into male and female categories.

MEC Hlophe, said: “We are excited to open up the nomination process for the people of Gauteng to identify the province’s top performing sports stakeholders whose success been showcased on an international level in some instances.

“We need Gauteng sporting federations and citizens to nominate qualifying candidates for the awards for them to receive their highly deserved recognition for their outstanding achievements.”

• Sport personality of the Year: SMS vote
• Sportsman of the Year
• Sportswoman of the Year
• Sports team of the Year
• Female sport team of the Year
• Male disabled sportswoman of the Year
• Disabled sportsman of the Year
• Disabled sport team of the Year
• Coach of the Year
• Most promising athlete of the Year
• Technical official of the Year
• Sport federation of the Year
• Administrator of the Year
• Amayanga -Yanga athlete of the Year
• Sport fan of the Year
• Community-based sport and recreation programme of the Year
• Online/virtual sport or recreation programme implemented (include e-gaming)
• Community sport media of the Year
• Sports journalist of the Year (This includes print media, radio and television)
• Lifetime achievement award (chosen by MEC)
