National team needs funding for world cup

The 14-member squad needs a total of R700 000 to cover travel, accommodation and other expenses at the tournament.

The South African Indoor Cricket Ladies team needs help to represent the country at the World Indoor Cricket Federation (WICF) World Cup in Australia in October.

The 14-member squad needs a total of R700 000 to cover travel, accommodation and other expenses at the tournament down under.

“Indoor cricket, especially women in this sport, has always been self-funded. No assistance is provided through government grants. Sponsorship is hard, if not impossible, to obtain. The lack of sponsorships impacts every facet of their game,” said the team’s Gaby Pita.

Despite the sport still being regarded as amateur, it has been played in the country since the 1980s and South Africa has been to several world cups – the ladies finished as runners-up after losing in the final to Australia in 2017.

“In South Africa, the sport is very often referred to as action cricket due to the franchised arenas where the sport is largely played.

“The action cricket company brought the sport to South Africa from Australia in the late 1980s. Many independently owned arenas have been opened country-wide since then.

“For companies looking to get on board with the South African Ladies team, there are some advantages like all contributions are tax deductible and a Section 21 certificate can be provided.

“We will also display company logos on our shirts, mention them during radio and TV interviews and we will promote them on our social media platforms among other things,” Pita added.

The tournament is scheduled for October 8 – 15 in Melbourne.

Those willing to contribute can contact team manager, Mike Wenk on 079 639 5112 for more information.
