Pillay wins gold in one-lap dash at U20 World Championships

He cut off 0.25 seconds from his personal best he achieved at the CGA Open Meet Three last year.

One-lap sensation Lythe Pillay won a gold medal in the men’s 400m final at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Colombia on August 4.

The former Arbor Primary School learner set the Pascual Guerrero Stadium in the city of Cali alight when he clocked 45:28 to win the race.

He cut off 0.25 seconds from the personal best he achieved when he rocketed around the Boksburg Stadium in 45:53 at the Central Gauteng Athletics meeting last year.

The 19-year-old faced stiff competition from American Steve McElroy, who finished second in 45:65. Bahrain’s Yusuf Ali Abbas took bronze to complete the podium.

Pillay couldn’t take his form into the men’s 4x400m relay as he and his teammates, Zakithi Nene, Ranti Dikgali and Thapelo Phora failed to qualify for the final despite clocking their season’s best time of 3:01:18 seconds in their heat.
