Northerns rugby juniors’ preparations for upcoming season on track

The U12s open their account against Springs Rugby Club on July 30

The Benoni Northerns Junior Rugby Club has been hard at training and preparing for its upcoming season, which starts at the end of July.

Having played little to no rugby the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the youngsters flocked to the Northerns grounds for their first try-outs – on July 8 for the U12s and on July 16 for the U9s.

The players display power at the scrum.

Clad in Northerns colours and their favourite rugby clubs’ shirts, the players were eager to impress, making it difficult for coaches Quinn van der Nest and André Kriel to pick suitable positions for them.

Passion and excitement were the order of the day as the boys ran after the egg-shaped ball, ducking challenges to cross the whitewash. The display of power was not missing as some got in hard in the rucks to win back possession.

With their parents barking instructions from the sidelines, the barefooted bunch did the hard yards to showcase that not all was lost in the past two years.

The U9s perfecting is their line-out.

While the scramble for positions reigned, it was left to the coaching staff’s sharp eyes and shrewd rugby minds to observe and make decisions to usher in a new crop of talented players to take Northerns rugby forward.
